most crucial days of the election. president obama and mitt romney will face off tonight in their first presidential debate. it will take place at this hockey arena in denver. romney has spent the past few days in the mile high city preparing for tonight. he took a break yesterday for lunch at chipotle. the president has been preparing in nevada. he visited the hoover dam. both campaigns now how crucial tonight's debate is. >> i think it's an opportunity for governor romney to flush out these issues face to face with president obama and there's no opportunity for the obama campaign to twist his message or his past words. >> he's very good at explaining what's going on, what he's proposing, what he has done. and i don't think there's anything to worry about. >> president obama and mitt romney will face off in two more debates, the next one is a week from tomorrow in danville, kentucky. president obama may be ahead in the polls in mean swing states, but nationally, the race for president remains extremely

tight. the president leads mitt romney by 3% among likely voters. the poll's margin of error is 3.1%. so that puts the race in a virtual tie. the president led his republican rival by five percentage points two weeks ago. he has a much wider lead in you consider registered voters. president obama leads romney by 7% in that category. mitt romney's campaign hoping to get a boost from comments vice president joe biden made yesterday. biden warned supporters in north carolina that romney and his running mate paul ryan would raise taxes on the middle class. >> how they can justify raising taxes on the middle class has been buried the last four years. >> of course the middle class has been buried. they're being bear rayed by regulations, by taxes, by borrowing. they're being buried by the obama administration's economic failures.

by a man she did not know. he tried to approach her. she was able to get inside before he reached her. police are searching for that man. council will discuss lowering red light traffic charges. a lot of drivers complain the program is simply there to raise money, not encourage safer driving 37 jack he ha driving. jack evans is proposing a bill to let uber operate in the district without having it fairs regulated by the taxicab commission. the service featureses an app on your smart phone for ordering a car to pick you up. tax city drivers complain uber is taking business away from them. uber's owner claims some d.c. council members want too much regulation which would shut the service down. the taxi commission is also reviewing uber's operation, but it could be months before there are any changes.

a news anchor decides to fire back against a critical e-mail. jennifer livingston is a morning anchor in wisconsin. a viewer complained about her weight and saying she's not a good role model for girls. as the mother of three daughters, livingston decided to respond. >> i am much more than a number on a scale. what really anchors me about this is there are children who don't know better, who get e-mails as critical as the one i received or in many cases even worse each and every day. >> livingston called the viewer a bully and says children learn that behavior from adults. thousands of people have written her messages in support online. we posted her entire message on the news 4 today facebook page.

italian scientists are searching for the remains of the woman who may have been the model for one of the most famous paintings in the world. experts believe the wife of a rich florentine merchant may have been the model for the portrait of mona lisa. she was buried in a con vent and scientists have been working there since april to find her skull. if they can find it, they can reconstruct her face and compare it to the painting. a big dig for jimmy hoffa's remains turned out to be a big bust. the soil sample did not contain human remains. a man dying of cancer told police he saw men burying a body there the nice hoffa disappeared. the former teamsters boss was last seen about 30 miles away from that area. police in that town had said they didn't expect to find his remains. american airlines says they know what caused some scary moments on board several flights over the past week as seats came

loose in midair. entire rows came loose during three flights twice on the same plane. that forced the carrier to ground 47 planes yesterday for inspections during which they found four more planes with the same issue. american says the problem started after seats were moved around on some planes. and the clamp that attaches the seats to the floor was not properly installed afterwards. >> it didn't get properly locked back down. mechanical failure, human error, we're trying to determine the problem and where was it introduced. >> sources tell nbc news that the seats were originally installed by contractors and then rechecked by american maintenance workers. the investigation continues in to what caused a deadly collision between two boats in hong kong earlier this week. monday a ferry collided with another boat taking people to see a fireworks show. 38 people died and more than 100 others were injured. officials with the ferry company say it vessel recently passed inspect and they're anxious to talk to the captain who is still in the hospital and unable to

speak. seven crew members from both boats have been arrested. a key witness in the jerry sandusky sex abuse trial is filing a whistle blower lawsuit against penn state. mike mcqueary testified that he saw sandusky sexually abusing a boy in the team locker room. now he is seeking millions of dollars in damages because he says he was defamed and misrepresented by the university. according to the suit, mcqueary was the only coach not invited to interview under the new football coach bill o'brien and he says he is the only former penn state employee whose legal fees were not reimbursed by the university. pope benedict's former butler admits to stealing documents and leaking them to a journalist. he took the stand yesterday in his own defense. he took responsibility for stealing the documents and insisted he had no other accomplices, but he still denies that he's guilty of the aggravated theft charges against him. he told the court that he is only guilty of betraying the pope's trust.

he faces four years in prison if he's convicted. one person seriously hurt after several explosions at a british columbia trucking company. a building and several tractor trailers were engulfed in flames in the fire. smoke was visible for miles. several neighbors businesses were evacuated and two lanes of a nearby bridge had to be closed. the cause of the explosions is still under investigation. a base jumper is lucky to be alive this morning after his parachute got snagged on the side of a cliff. 26-year-old adam gardner got stuck about halfway down the 400-foot cliff in provo canyon in utah. rescuers had to be lowered down and clip him to a rope without knocking his parachute loose. after about four hours, he was lowered to safety. in news for your health, vitamin d might not come as much to keep colds away as initially thought. researchers in new zealand

studied patients getting high doses for two years. they also followed patients getting a placebo. they found no difference in the number of colds and upper respiratory infections. the study is published in this month's journal of the american medical association. research confirms that tanning beds are bad news. a new study found tanning beds are responsible for more than 170,000 cases of skin cancer every year. researchers say people who begin tanning before the age of 25 are at the highest risk especially for nonmelanoma skin cancers. previous studies had already linked tanning beds to malignant melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. today is national walk to school day. the event is designed to promote health and well being of families. >> i'm going to say take the bus to school, maybe do a couple lapses around the classroom, because it's foggy. >> right, take precaution when

irrelevant and useful intelligence. the report also cites potential spying on american muslims that may have broken privacy laws. the department of homeland security says the report is out of date and misleading and that the centers have been used to thwart terrorist attacks. today martin o'malley will introduce a plan that would allow utilities to add a surcharge to raise money for reliability improvement. o'malley says the plan allows power companies to add a dollar or two to monthly electric bills to pay for maintenance upgrades. in exchange, utilities would have to meet stricter reliability standards and have a harder time raising rates in the future. o'malley says the plan would accelerate much needed work that could keep the power on. opponents say it is rewarding you it tilts for not paying for the maintenance themselves. michael brown's opponent this year in the election is raising profits about a nonprofit group the council member once ran. the independent candidate wants the irs to audit the ronald h.

brown foundation. the organization is named for brown's father, a former commerce secretary and dnc chairman who died in a plane crash. it lost its tax exempt stat fuss 2010 because it hadn't filed tax returns for the previous three years. michael brown says he hadn't dealt with the foundation since 2008. it has been ten years since the men known as the beltway snipers terrorized our region. john alan know ham mid and lee malvo killed ten people, among them son any buchanan who was mowing the lawn. his sister has raised more $100,000 to award scholarships to help students go to college. >> we have to hope for change. and, you know, sometimes it's all in our attitude. >> mohammed was executed in 2009. malvo is now 27 years old and serving multiple life sentences

without the possibility of parole. the family of a government contractor jailed in cuba is making another plea to have the maryland than released. family members now fear alan gross has cancer. an american radiologist says he looked at ct and ultrasound scans cuban doctors performed on a mass behind his shoulder. they diagnosed it as a hematoma that would disappear. the radiologist is concerned it's more serious because gross has lost a lot of weight. gross is serving a a year sentence for providing internet equipment to the jewish community. angie goff is at the live desk with breaking news. >> the death toll is rising now. 40 people confirmed dead and 72 injured after a string of car bombings in syria's biggest city. the pictures of devastating, total destruction here, buildings reduced to nothing. this was in the main square in the government controlled city of allepo. triple car bombings are believed to to be the cause.

welcome back. the trial begins today for the sole survivor of a fiery crash in chevy chase. richardson says he's not responsible for the crash that killed three teenagers. police say richardson was a passenger in a stolen car that crashed and burst into flames after a chase earlier this year. richardson has been charged with car theft, but maintains he's innocent. he's also filed a civil suit against police alleging officers are the ones really responsible for the crash. >> the video shows a pursuit being recklessly engaged this in

officers. >> police say they followed standard law enforcement procedure. a jury finds a man guilty of chasing down and beating a teen earlier this year. yesterday a jury found 22-year-old tayshaun powell guilty of assault and robbery. prosecutors argued powell was in a group who chased down a teen back in april and brutally beat him. the video ended up on facebook and became a key piece of evidence, but also a source of dispute. >> the video shows clearly that this defendant, mr. powell, was the assailant, the main actor in this case. >> i feel like it's racial profiling. i did not see tayshaun hit nobody. he was not running up there. >> powell will be sentenced in december. he faces up to 25 years in prison. police in prince gornls county hope this video will help them solve a string of robberies.

there were three robberies. each time the men came in early in the morning, tied up the employees and emptied the register. police are investigating whether foul play was involved in the disappearance of a 36-year-old mother. she's not been seen since august. court documents show she had a rocky relationship with her husband and she was charged with domestic assault earlier this year. a search of her husband's apartment turned up multiple guns and large amounts of ammunition. she was originally from russia and told police her husband assaulted her and threatened to have her deported. a man charged with hitting a pedestrian while driving drunk has a history of driving troubles. the 22-year-old was arrested for a dui after a crash. the victim from richmond remains in a coma. now we've learned that wills has been charged or cited in at least four other incidents in our area roads since march. they've ranged from speeding to reckless driving. this morning the washington

humane society is asking for your donations to help a dog stabbed seven times. the 2-year-old shih tzu named cocoa was stabbed by her owner during a domestic dispute. she is recovering at a local animal hospital. the veterinarians say cocoa will need extensive rehab for her wounds. she's on a lot of medication to prevent infection and to ease the pain. cocoa's owner was arrested. his name has not been released. police say more charges could be filed. animal control had to remove 40 animals from a pasadena, maryland home in what it calls one of the most unique cases of animal hoarding ever. last nurse officers seized a pig, snakes, a skunk, turtle, even a gold fish. we saw some goats, too. investigators claim many of the animals did not have food or water. the owner, 21-year-old shane taylor, tells us he is not a hoarder and he denies that the animals were neglected. >> this is the lowest i've ever been in my life. for the size of the property

visibilities are about a third of the mile, so not too bad. but the humidity is a bit higher on the eastern shore and that's why they have some of those school delays there in queen ann and kent counties. there temperatures in the low to mid-70s as well as right near the bay, but west, we're generally in the 60s most locations all the way into the mountains whereby the way, the autumn color is going to be at peak this weekend in western maryland, much of west virginia. we do have breaks in the clouds over the fog now. so once this fog does dissipate by mid to late morning, we ought to get some sunshine breaking out. but all through the morning next two or three hour, we'll be in the 60s to near 70. and then by noon, sun breaking out, humid and steamy. by then near 80. and then by midafternoon, the mid-80s. feeling like august in october. and humid. then tomorrow turning less humid, beautiful an, highs near 80. more of the same on friday with sunshine both thursday and bring. increasing clouds saturday. might get showers sunday morning
